In the heart of Porto, like in many other historical cities, there's a widespread practice of maintaining the exterior façades of buildings and demolishing their interior. Economic value tends to determine the conservation or destruction of architectural and cultural heritage. Só Fachada is the result of the particular circumstances of a cultural space born in the back of a vacant building in Rua dos Clérigos, Porto. The liveliness of the street hides the silence of an abandoned façade in the heart of the city.
INSTITUTO's renovated space brings new energy to the atmosphere of abandonment that has characterised this space for several decades. It was also an opportunity to invite the Underdogs cultural platform to develop a project to bring new life to this building, through residencies, artistic interventions and participatory workshops.
The project arises from the desire to explore the contrasting realities of the city, proposing the transformation of an old building into an inverted gallery, open-air and on a balcony.
Curated by Underdogs, the artists Kruella d'Enfer, ±MaisMenos±, and berru were invited to an artistic residency in INSTITUTO, to produce artistic interventions on the façade of the adjacent building, which communicates with the street. The interventions have a temporary character, which allows each artist to intervene in the place for a period of twenty days, the duration of the artistic residencies. In this way, the project proposes to reframe the role of the building itself, bringing new life to its current condition, transforming its façade for the enjoyment of the city and its inhabitants.
This publication compiles the process and result of the work developed over several months in the context of the project Só Fachada. It also includes several reflections on the role of artistic creation and small cultural institutions in thinking about our contemporary urban condition.
