Established in 2010 and consolidated in its present form in 2013, Underdogs works with a diversified roster of Portuguese and international artists connected with the urban inspired contemporary art universe, fostering the development of close relationships between creators, the public, and the city with the aim of promoting art as an everyday experience.
Exploring the dynamic triad nature – human being – machine, Ana + Betânia arrived at the image of a decrepit machine gun with already-oxidised inscriptions, like war wounds.
This weapon intends to symbolise domination through force. It is the declining side of the progress of the machine: it serves technological and economic development to the detriment of human evolution.
Associated to this weapon is a portion of verdant soil with moss, small fungi and wild flowers – a living body. The base form of this body has the configuration of a torrent of fire and smoke.
The relation between these two elements culminates in the weapon’s final explosion: a seed of life, nature’s counter-attack.
