PRIVATE VIEWING ROOM
Underdogs is thrilled to unveil four captivating new editions by Alfredo Cunha and Alexandre Farto aka Vhils, in this secluded room, restricted to a select number of guests. Don't miss this rare opportunity to acquire them, available only now.
Growing up in the politically charged environment of the South Bank in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Alexandre Farto aka Vhils became fascinated by its walls brimming with the faded remains of political murals and posters from the post-revolutionary period. In 2005, Alexandre Farto aka Vhils began working with agglomerations of these same posters which he removed from the streets. This was the first medium he used to explore a carving technique and led to his remarkable conceptual approach of dissecting and decomposing objects and surfaces to reveal the formative layers that describe the intimate relationship between the city and its inhabitants.
As one of the most celebrated photographers of the 25 April 1974 Revolution, Alfredo Cunha invited Alexandre Farto aka Vhils to work over some of his photographs, which today stand as vital documents for the collective memory of the period. In conjunction with the “A poesia está na rua” [Poetry is in the streets] exhibition at Underdogs’ main gallery space, the Capsule showcases four screen print editions that are the outcome of this fertile collaboration, originally created for the cover and separators of Cunha’s book “25 de Abril de 1974, quinta-feira” [25 April 1974, Thursday] published in 2023 by Edições Tinta-da-china. This new series of works celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution by extolling what lies at the core of both Alexandre Farto aka Vhils’ and Alfredo Cunha’s practices: the prominence of people.
